Completed in 1791, Berlin's Brandenburger Tor is a symbol of Germany. Built as a city gate during Prussian rule, the Tor stands in present-day Pariser Platz. After World War II, the Tor was one of 8 checkpoints between East and West Berlin. A chariot driven by the Roman goddess of Victory stands atop the tower. After the fall of Napoleon, an iron cross was added as a mark of Prussian power. One of Europe's most recognizable landmarks, the Tor stands for centuries of German history.
